Quantum of Solace Break Bond Office Record

>> Nov 17, 2008

Bond is still people’s beloved agent of all time, the latest film of British spy, “Quantum of Solace” which already a big hit overseas, now set another new opening record in North America with estimated weekend sales of $70.4 million, according to the distributor Columbia Pictures. The record before was held by "Die Another Day," which earned $47.1 million across the United States and Canada during its first weekend in November 2002. The 2006 predecessor "Casino Royale," which rebooted all Bond’s systems, only opened with $40.8 million but then become the highest grosser Bond of all time with $160 million and the worldwide gross approached $600 million. Industry pundits had forecast an opening in the $60 million range for "Quantum of Solace," even though top critics had largely panned the movie. "Solace's" win at the domestic box office continues the film's worldwide domination. Through Sunday, the 22nd official Bond pic had earned an estimated $251.6 million at the international box office for a worldwide total of $322 million. "It's totally extraordinary," Columbia Pictures distribution president Rory Bruer said of the film's early box office success. "Everybody is really loving the movie." "With 'Casino Royale,' people were rediscovering the franchise in a way with Daniel Craig as James Bond," added Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony. "Quite frankly, they loved it. They loved the movie, and they loved him in the role, so I think by the time `Quantum of Solace' was ready, audiences in the U.S. as well as the world audience was way ready."

"Quantum of Solace" also gave a huge boost to overall revenues as Hollywood heads toward Thanksgiving, one of the year's busiest weekends at theaters. The top 12 movies took in $142.9 million, up 54 percent from the same weekend a year ago, when "Beowulf" led the box office with $27.5 million.

DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa," which debuted at No. 1 the previous weekend, slipped to second place with $36.1 million, raising its 10-day total to $118 million.

Meanwhile, Paul Rudd/Seann William Scott comedy’s “Role Models” keep drawing surprisingly strong B.O number with its second weekend gross of $11.7 million, after a $19.2 million debut last weekend. After two weekends, Role Models has a gross of $38.1 million against a budget of only $28 million, the film proves to be excellent counter-programming against big films like “Quantum of Solace”.

In limited release this weekend, Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire opened, and is noted as it could be an Oscar nominated release. This Fox Searchlight release opened at 10 venues, and had a gross of $350,000 - good for a venue average of $35,000. Expect to hear a lot more about this one as the weekends move forward.
