Monster vs. Aliens Conquered the Box Office

>> Mar 30, 2009

Conquered the weekend box office this week is Dreamworks’ “Monster vs. Aliens.” The film features creatures from 1950s flicks in a showdown with invading extraterrestrials, launched itself into the No. 1 spot with a $58.2 million debut, according to studio estimates Sunday. It was the biggest debut so far in 2009, topping the $55.2 million first weekend of “Watchmen" in early March and it also was at the upper end of analysts' forecasts within a $50 million to $60 million range. The 1,550 3-D screens represented only 58% of the entire gross, although those runs made up just 28% of the total theater count of 4,104. Among the 3-D runs, "Monsters" played in 143 IMAX locations, grossing about $5.2 million. And that's a record for a 3-D flick.
Reese Witherspoon leads the cast of "Monsters vs. Aliens," providing vocals for a woman who grows to nearly 50 feet after an encounter with a meteor. The voice cast also includes Seth Rogen , Kiefer Sutherland , Hugh Laurie , Will Arnett and Stephen Colbert. The Dreamworks company plans to offer 3-D versions of all of its future animated films, including next year's “How to Train Your Dragon" and "Shrek Goes Fourth," the third sequel to the blockbuster ogre franchise. Other upcoming 3-D releases this year include Pixar Animation's "Up" and James Cameron’s sci-fi adventure "Avatar."

Opening in second place was Lionsgate 's ghost story "The Haunting in Connecticut" with $23 million in ticket sales. The film stars Viriginia Madsen, who hasn't had a big film since “Sideways” in 2004, which finished with $71.5 million. For Lionsgate, this is also another horror success for them. They've actually had a bit more luck recently, with a strong Tyler Perry effort in “Madea Goes To Jail,” which almost made it to $100 million.

Last week's champ, the Nicolas Cage thriller "Knowing," fell to No. 3 with $14.7 million, taking its 10-day total to $46.2 million. The film was released by Summit Entertainment, which is privately held. Rudd-Segal’s comedy “I Love You, Man” also fell to the fourth spot and earning another $12.6 million it has a total so far of $37 million. Those two followed by “Duplicity” which falls to fifth and the Julia Roberts/Clive Owen flick earned $7.6 milllion in its second frame. A busy marketplace condemned “Duplicity,” and it has a total so far of $25.6 million. As expected, “Race to Witch Mountain” got hammered by “Monsters vs. Aliens,” and the Disney live action feature tumbles from fourth last weekend to a distant sixth this weekend. Race earned only $5.6 million in its third weekend and has not turned into the hit Disney thought it would be, as it has a gross so far of $53.3 million.

Last newcomer of the week, John Cena’s action-fest “12 Rounds,” finishes weak enough in seventh and earned only $5.3 million over opening weekend.
