In the upcoming 20th anniversary issue of Empire, they will also revealing some updates for the highly anticipated prequel to "The Lord Of The Rings" trilogy, "The Hobbit." The magazine had the chance to speak to Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro about their epic films, which are expectedly will hit theaters in 2011 and 2012.

"We've decided to have "The Hobbit" span the two movies, including the White Council and the comings and goings of Gandalf to Dol Guldur," del Toro reveals. It was originally announced in late 2006 that "The Hobbit" would become two movies, however the story contained within the book would be adapted solely into the first movie itself, and a "bridge" story to span the LOTR gap would be written specifically for the second movie.
"We decided it would be a mistake to try to cram everything into one movie," added Jackson. "The essential brief was to do The Hobbit, and it allows us to make The Hobbit in a little more style, if you like, of the [LOTR] trilogy."

This is probably the best way to go. Cramming The Hobbit into one film would have meant some stuff wouldn’t have made it into the movie. Laying it out over 2 movies means that they can do it more justice.
