Museum Creatures Beat Terminator Cyborgs in Box Office Battle

According to Box Office Mojo, "The touted war between blockbuster sequels turned into a not unsurprising easy victory for family audiences".
"Night at the Museum: Battle Of The Smithsonian", the first family film in the marketplace since "Monsters vs. Aliens", easily took the top spot at the Memorial Day holiday weekend box-office. 'Museum' pulled in $15.3 million in its Friday opening and jumped to $20 million on Saturday. At present estimates have it at a $53.5M three-day and $65-70M four-day holiday haul.
Reviews panned the film, generally putting it only a touch lower than its predecessor. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 43% T-meter rank and a 5.1/10 average score, the exact same average score as both "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "Angels & Demons", and a dash behind the first 'Museum' on both fronts (44% & 5.3/10). Over on Metacritic it scored 43/100 which again was both the exact same score as 'Wolverine' and only slightly smaller than the 48/100 of the original.
Coming in second was "Terminator Salvation" which sadly seem to have underperformed. Opening a day earlier on Thursday with $13.5 million, the sci-fi sequel took in $15M on Friday and $14.8M on Saturday. Early estimates figure in the $43M for three days, mid-$50M for the four-day weekend, and around $65M for its first five days. That's about equal to the opening of box-office disappointment "Watchmen" which didn't benefit from a holiday opening. "Terminator 3" opened several years ago to a first five day haul of $72 million.
Reviews were a touch more positive but overall still down on McG's sequel/reboot. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 34% T-Meter and 5.2/10 average score, considerably behind "Terminator 3" (70% & 6.6/10) and the near perfect scores of the first two films. Metacritic was more forgiving with a 52/100 which was behind "Terminator 3" (66/100) but the second best of the major May releases behind only "Star Trek" (83/100).
Both "Angels and Demons" and "Star Trek" are duking it out for the third and fourth place with both looking to roughly get around $28M each for the four day holiday. 'Demons' continues doing huge business worldwide and could hit $300M by next week, domestically it fell an average 53% in its second round. "Star Trek" fell 49% in its third weekend and will cross the $200M mark domestically by this time next week. Newcomer comedy "Dance Flick" looks set to open with a quiet $13.5M for the four-day weekend.
