Hangover Made A Record in Second Weekend Box Office
>> Jun 15, 2009
When last weekend “The Hangover” turned out as the new champion in the box office, this weekend, the already one of the biggest R-rated comedy openings of all time is still remain as the top box-office draw for a second-straight week with a fantastic gross of $33.4 million, and a domestic cumulative total of $105.4 million. A well written funny comedy and word of mouth really helped it stay on top.
Though not able to maintain its top position for the second week or third week, Disney-Pixar’s 3D animation “Up” is still high with its box office taken. After a $44 million haul in the previous frame, the animated adventure earned $30.5 million, and drops a still fantastic 31%. The family flick has now grossed a fantastic $187.2 million, already out-grossing its large production budget of $175 million. It also now officially becomes the third highest domestic gross of 2009, behid "Star Trek" ($232 million) and "Monsters vs Aliens" ($195 million).
“The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” is absolutely right to its point, count to three and exactly goes to the third position in its opening weekend. The film earned an okay $25 million despite starring A-listers Denzel Washington and John Travolta (compare it to “Hangover” which starring the largely unknown cast). Reviews were split right down the middle for this film, with RottenTomatoes recording a score of 51%, with 61 critics liking it, and 59 not.
“Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” managed to take the number four spot after four weekends of play. Museum 2 had a much better weekend than last week bomb “Land of the Lost,” as The Ben Stiller comedy pulled in another $9.6 million and drops a not bad 34%. Meanwhile, after a poor opening last weekend at only $18.8 million, the Will Ferrell flick gets drubbed again, recording another poor showing of only $9.2 million.
Following the unsuccessful Will Ferrell this summer, another veteran comedian, Eddie Murphy also suffered a rough weekend with his newest family pic "Imagine That" which came in below expectations in grossing $5.7 million from 3,008 theaters. The Paramount pic placed No. 6 and had a budget of $55 million. "Imagine" is Murphy's first movie since last summer's bomb "Meet Dave," which also misfired in opening to $5.4 million and earning a total of $11.8 million.
In limited release, the feature debut of David Bowie's 38-year-son Duncan Jones, opened strongly. "Moon," starring Sam Rockwell as an astronaut, who confronts a clone of himself while mining lunar helium, earned $145,000 from just eight theaters in New York and Los Angeles. The Sony Pictures Classics release expands across the United States throughout June and July.
