G.I Joe Boosted Up The Box Office Energy in Top Spot
>> Aug 11, 2009
While last weekend is somewhat an anemic week in box office, thankfully to G.I. Joe and Meryl Streep, Box office has recharged its energy again this weekend.
Inspired by the Hasbro action figure, Paramount's "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" boosted up the weekend box office in North America despite some bad buzz. The film earned a $54.7 million debut domestically and follows Paramount's "Transformers" franchise as the latest toy story to find success on the big screen. "The thing we saw from 'Transformers' is that with these kind of movies, at times critics have a hard time getting their arms around them," said Rob Moore, Paramount vice chairman. "But the audience got exactly what it was. A fun summer movie, a great way to end your summer. You just relax and have a good time. You don't have to worry about global politics or global warming."
“The Rise of Cobra" also became the fourth-biggest August debut of all time with the record was set in 2007 by "The Bourne Ultimatum" which earned $69.3 million, while "Rush Hour 2" kicked off with $67.4 million in 2001, and "Signs" with $60 million in 2002. All ended up with more than $220 million.
Finishing second is another newcomer from the duet of Meryl Streep – Amy Addams, “Julie & Julia.” The drama which opened to $20 million attached Streep as French famous chef Julia Child, and Adams stars in a parallel story as a young woman who seeks to replicate the noted chef's culinary exploits. The new film yet again added in Streep excellent resume as the summer box office draw in the last few years. She’s appearing in five $20 million plus openers since 2004 (“The Manchurian Candidate” with a $20 million opening, “Lemony Snicket” with a $30 million opening, “The Devil Wears Prada” with a $27.5 million opening, and “Mamma Mia!” with a $27.8 million opening).
Falling down to third is Disney’s 3D “G-Force” which still manage to earned another $9.8 million and add to a new total of $86.1 million. “Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince” is in the fourth with $8.9 million and has now become the fourth biggest in the franchise with total $273 million that passed “The Chamber of Secrets,” which took in $262 million in 2002. Meanwhile, last weekend's champion, "Funny People," slid badly to No. 5 with $7.9 million, taking the 10-day total for writer/director Judd Apatow's comedic disappointment to $40.4 million.
Third new release of the week, Milla Jovovich’s slasher thriller "A Perfect Getaway” opened dimly at No. 7 with $5.8 million and it’s somewhat the Universal studio's sixth consecutive miss at a summer hit.
