A Christmas Carol Takes the Crown This Weekend
>> Nov 10, 2009
Even though Disney's “A Christmas Carol” was #1 over the weekend with $30 million, dethrones “This Is It” at North American Box Office, the new 3-D movie from director Rob Zecmekis didn't score an opening number as big as what Disney was expecting for. Unfortunately, it underperformed since it cost $200 million to make, it even opened below Carrey's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," which hit theaters during the same month nine years ago, and took in $55.1 during its opening weekend. But “Carol” scored better than Zemeckis’ "Polar Express", which had an opening weekend of $23.5 million. Commenting on "Carol" performance at the chart, Disney's head of distribution Chuck Viane said, "You have to play these things for the long term. You've got to have the patience and you've got to pick the right weekend. For us, the days when the malls turned to Christmas stores is when we wanted to go." He added with a positive note, "Holiday movies that open early tend to get above-average multiples." This was the case with "The Polar Express," which totaled $180 million after a slow start. “A Christmas Carol” also takes over 3-D cinemas until December when Jim Cameron's “Avatar” finally opens.
Moonwalking to the second place was "This Is It". The movie that compiled the late King of Pop's rehearsal footage faced drop in ticket sales, making it to collect only around $13,1 million in its second week in theaters. Since its debut on October 28, it has brought in $57 million in North America alone and $127.3 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
The overshadowed performances this weekend featuring such big names as George Clooney and Cameron Diaz, Clooney's dark comedy "The Men Who Stare at Goats," finished at No. 3 with $12.7 million while Diaz and James Marsden's sci-fi tale "The Box" opened far at No. 6 with $7.5 million. Meanwhile, horror/sci-fi pic starring Milla Jovovich, “The Fourth Kind,” took fourth and gets off to a better than expected start. The film managed to finish second on Friday night, and had a weekend gross of $12.2 million. This is a decent opening for Jovovich, and while it doesn't come up to the grosses she's perceived with “Resident Evil” films, it does crush everything else she's done.
In limited theaters, "Precious", the drama about an abused inner-city teen that already being mentioned as a possible Oscar contender was able to take in $1.8 million in only 18 theaters, which is a gigantic $100,000 per-theater average. The Oprah Winfrey-produced drama which set a box office record by becoming the first film ever to open in more than 10 theaters and earn an average of $100,000 per theater, will expand to five more markets by next weekend.
