Early on, there’s a buzz claimed actress Rachel McAdams at the top of the list to play Felicia Hardy, known to comic book fans as The Black Cat in the fourth "Spider-Man" film. It was reported that McAdams who will become visible in next month’s “Sherlock Holmes” has had a meeting with producers regarding taking a role. To discover if there is any exactness to that rumor, Entertainment Weekly went directly to McAdams. "That's a total rumor, I have to say," revealed McAdams. "I was hanging out in Toronto the other day and someone came up to me and said, 'I just heard you're doing Spider-Man 4.' And I said, 'Really? No one told me!' It's not true."
McAdams tells Entertainment Weekly that the story was not factual and a rep for Sony Pictures concurs: “It’s an Internet rumor, as so many things are these days.” However, though she has denied being cast in “Spider-Man 4” as Black Cat, and Sony Pictures calls the web reports mearly “internet rumor”, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a bit of truth to the story. According to UGO, Julia Stiles (Bourne Ultimatum) has met with a casting company in New York to discuss the fourth installment. No word on what role she is shooting for, but we suppose it's for The Black Cat, the same role that McAdams was rumored for.
Last week, it also has been exposed that Sony had put out a casting call for a new female lead for the fourth Spider-Man film, and that Romola Garai (Amazing Grace, The Other Man) has auditioned for the role. Garai, McAdams, and Stiles all fall into the near 30-year-old age range, and have a similar look. Another source also has confirmed that Black Cat is in the screenplay, but the character is could be the daughter of the new man in charge of the Daily Bugle, who just happens to be one of Spidey’s new villains. In comic book version, the Black Cat is a skilled (somewhat reformed) cat burglar who is currently an occasional crime fighter and adventurer. She first donned the Black Cat costume in order to break her father out of prison. On the same night, she met Spider-Man, later becoming obsessed with him and even becoming the girlfriend of Peter Parker.
