New Moon is Full and Bright in Summit Box Office

>> Nov 24, 2009

In its first opening day, "Twilight" sequel "New Moon" set box office history with breaking all records for midnight runs, grossing a whopping $26 million as it debuted in 3,514 theaters at 12:01 am on Friday. The score easily beats the $22.2 million collected by "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" this summer. Even "The Dark Knight" which eventually took a high weekend gross from the box office only had $18.5 million from the midnight sale. The next history made by the overall Friday haul of the vampire romance sequel which vanquished the best single day previously held by the $67.2 million opening of "The Dark Knight." “New Moon" took in a massive $72.7 million in its first day to easily break the record. Consensus pre-release forecasts put the likely first-weekend tally for “New Moon” at $85 million-plus. Not even a meteoric burnout on Saturday and Sunday would keep the largely female-fueled film from soaring well past those projections. However, "New Moon" is screened in 4,024 locations that relatively fewer numbers compared to "Dark Knight" that was played widely in 4,366 theaters.

The abysmal reviewed "New Moon", continues its success story with the first three days domestic gross that however failed to top “The Dark Knight's” three-day opening weekend record of $158 million. Instead, after claiming the Best Midnight Opening record and Best Opening Day record, “New Moon” will have to settle for third on the Best Opening Weekend list after walking away with a pretty astonishing $142 million when it was all said and done. On the all-time domestic chart, now it’s only behind last year's $158.4 million opening weekend for the “Batman Begins” blockbuster sequel and 2007's $151.1 million haul for "Spider-Man 3." Twi-hards really almost gave Batman and Spider-Man fans a run for their money. Among the top-10 all-time openings, "New Moon" is the only one that came outside of Hollywood's busiest time, the summer season. The current ruler of the pop culture world also does become the biggest November opener ever, beating three “Harry Potter” flicks by a country mile (the top Potter in November is “Goblet of Fire”, with a $102.3 million opening frame). Overseas, the film also added $118.1 million from 25 countries. “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” is already set to hit theaters next June 30th. And if the Twilight franchise can do this well in November, just imagine how well it'll do in the summer. Spidey and Bats might not be holding on to their weekend records for long.

In a surprise second spot, Sandra Bullock stumbles on another 2009 blockbuster with her name in lead cast. After such a huge opening for “New Moon”, sports drama “The Blind Side” still able to earned a very impressive $34.1 million from 3,110 venues. It seems the film have worked as excellent counter-programming to the more female targeted vampire flick. The film stars Bullock in the real-life story of Baltimore Ravens tackle Michael Oher, who was a homeless teen taken in by a wealthy family and enrolled in private school. "Football happens to be a part of the story, but it's really more about family and inspiration," said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. head of distribution.

"2012" is still blowing things up in the theater. It came in third with $26.4 million and has earned a whopping $450 million total with $341 million coming internationally. With domestic total of $108.1 million and big International reception so far, Sony and Emerich is going to be quite happy with the dip as the disaster epic heads into the Thanksgiving weekend. Meanwhile, another Sony’s prod that opened this weekend, “Planet 51”, garnered a so-so $12.2 million in fifth spot. This $50 million animation film is not likely to recover its production budget.
