No More “Old Boy” Remake for Steven Spielberg

>> Nov 12, 2009

One year ago, Steven Spielberg has announced that he was in discussions with Will Smith to remake Chan Wook-Park's cult film "Oldboy." However, rights issues start surfaced but Spielberg still confident that everything would be resolved. Now, Latino Review is reporting that the project is finally dead in the water. While, Spielberg’s film was to be an adaptation of the original manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, and not actually a direct remake of the South Korean film, Dreamworks and original Korean production studio Mandate were working together to get the rights to the manga, but the two couldn’t reach an agreement, and Dreamworks simply walked away.

What this means is that Spielberg and Smith are also no longer attached. And the project is now considered lifeless. SlashFilm added that since Mandate couldn’t agree on terms with two huge Hollywood names behind the project, they’re not sure if we’ll see anyone else attempting to do another American “Oldboy” project anytime soon. Then again, if it was just about Dreamworks wanting more of the pie than Mandate could tolerate, perhaps a smaller studio with less clout would actually be more agreeable for Mandate.

In the 2003 Korean original, story revolves around a man who gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.
