Plot Details for Oren Peli’s “Area 51” Revealed
>> Nov 12, 2009
Oren Peli’s debut project, “Paranormal Activity” has turned out to be a box office mammoth for Paramount Pictures, and now all eyes are on his upcoming project, “Area 51”. Peli has began the production of his second feature which is described as a “claustrophobic terror” last month. But so far, he is trying to keep details under wraps, saying “I’d rather not say anything about ‘Area 51′ except that I am very pleased to be working with the same team who stood by me for the two or three years it took ‘Paranormal Activity’ to get into theaters.” All we know is that the new film will have a “significantly larger budget than the $11,000 that was spent on Paranormal Activity, the story will be framed in a “found footage” narrative, and will center around “three teenagers whose curiosity leads them to the legendary and mysterious Area 51 Air Force base deep in the Nevada desert.”
But today, Latino Review via LEVLE was able to score a look at Peli's 43 page Script/Outline hybrid. Their observations make it seem like “Area 51” is basically “Paranormal Activity” with aliens. The film revolves around four teenagers (Chris, Paul, Rob, Natalie) who head to Las Vegas, but not for gambling. Chris sets up a meeting with a former Area 51 employee (Novak), who while working there, has heard of human/alien experiments. Novak has never seen anything himself, but knows that there is video proof. Paul doesn't believe any of this, but Chris becomes determined to retrieve the video evidence.
"Area 51" will once again use handheld cameras to record everything. In fact, the film starts with Chris testing out his brand new handycam. There is also a sub-story regarding Natalie, whose father claims to have been abducted by aliens. And once the group enters the secret location, there is more than enough suspense and alien action to thrill audiences. For this project, studio handed Peli around $7 million to see what he is really capable of with a proper budget. If "Area 51" becomes a success, there is a possibility that the filmmaker will continue pumping out low-budget thrillers every year, using the handycam style.
