Guillermo Del Toro Quits The Middle Earth

>> May 31, 2010

There’s much of displeased news for this final day of May. After a report about “Ong Bak” star Tony Jaa who has exited the film industry, now it was announced by Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro currently on TheOneRing site that Guillermo Del Toro is off of “The Hobbit”. The reasoning basically comes down to the indefinite delays forced on the film by the financial uncertainty surrounding MGM - who hold part of the rights - and Del Toro's unwillingness to continue delaying his many, many other in-development projects while waiting for a start date that may never come for the “Lord of the Rings” prequel.

Below is Del Toro’s statement as posted on fansite The One Ring:

“In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming "The Hobbit," I am faced with the hardest decision of my life. After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien's Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures. I remain grateful to Peter, Fran and Philippa Boyens, New Line and Warner Brothers and to all my crew in New Zealand. I've been privileged to work in one of the greatest countries on earth with some of the best people ever in our craft and my life will be forever changed. The blessings have been plenty, but the mounting pressures of conflicting schedules have overwhelmed the time slot originally allocated for the project. Both as a co-writer and as a director, I wish the production nothing but the very best of luck and I will be first in line to see the finished product. I remain an ally to it and its makers, present and future, and fully support a smooth transition to a new director.”

Also according to the site, “The Hobbit” is still planned to be adapted into two movies, one to be released in December 2012 & the other in December 2013. So as far as they know, it's still on, but no mention of who's taking Del Toro place instead.

I can't say I'm sad. Del Toro has a very violent directorial vision, so I wouldn't mind seeing some other director in the Hobbitland.

Terrible news! I really didn't expect that and I refuse to believe it. Guillermo was the perfect director for The Hobbit! After knowing he's not going to direct it, I'm not as excited as I was before.

Yep.. As much as I want to see this, another sign that this will never be made in the coming years. Del Toro would have been perfect for The Hobbit and I don't know if another director could capture his vision.
