Comic-Con Buzzes: Captain America, Green Lantern, Super
>> Jul 25, 2010
The Marvel panel at San Diego Comic-Con began with an exclusive teaser trailer for "Captain America: The First Avenger". Director Joe Johnston calls the film “a classic adventure love story with an edge.” he says that his favorite movie of all time is Raiders of the Lost Ark, a movie which he also worked on. He says that Raiders feels as modern today as it did they day it was filmed. This is his goal for Captain America. Filming has been going on for a few weeks now but Chris Evans only started on set five days ago and claims that he “did some nice gentle scenes to get my feet wet.”
Here is the teaser trailer description: The teaser begins showing clips from World War II superimposed over close-ups of the Captain’s shield, while audio plays of FDR’s “Day That Will Live in Infamy” speech. On screen text reads: “Stories emerged…. But one story has never been told…. Every army starts with one man.” Cut to a shot of a silhouette of Captain America. On screen text reads: “Next Summer you will meet the First Avenger” We then see a short shot of Chris Evans in costume as Captain America shown from behind/side. Captain America logo. Cut to another shot of Evans in costume, this time from the front view. We don’t get to see much as he tosses his shield at the camera.
Marvel head/producer Kevin Feige admits that Chris has only been in a test version of the suit. The footage from the teaser trailer was filmed at a costume test. “The suit is coming together well but isn’t finished yet.” he says it’s more realistic than the cartoony version of the suit that leaked a month back. “It is something that is unequivocally the Captain America uniform but fits the time period.”
Actor Hugo Weaving added that he listed to tapes of verger Herzog to help him get the voice of Red Skull. He has only worked one day in the mask, and he has “only started” getting to “make the mask work. “
Meanwhile, in DC comics adaptation panel, Ryan Reynolds along with castmates Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong and director Martin Campbell, presented a clip from "Green Lantern". Reynolds says he took the title role in this film to play a hero that can "throw a punch, tell a joke and kiss a girl."
Campbell says the 3-D movie blends realistic action with humor and an otherworldly trip to the planet Oa, home of the Green Lanterns. He added that while the hero's costume is "a work in progress," his cinematic story is set: He is joined by his fellow Green Lanterns for a face-off against Parallax, whom Reynolds describes as "the physical manifestation of fear in our movie."
Sarsgaard shed some light on Hector Hammond, summing him up as "the kind of kid who licked the battery or went up to the roof with a coat hanger in a lightning storm." Mark Strong also spoke a little about Sinestro, Hal's mentor of sorts who later turns on him — though it doesn't sound like we'll see his bad side in this first film.
The clip showed Reynolds as Hal Jordan, who, after a fight with street thugs, takes the Green Lantern oath and uses his new powers to blow them away. Reynolds recited the oath for the Comic-Con crowd, which rewarded him with cheers.
And following "Kick-Ass" in the subversive-indie-superhero-parody party is "Super", the film written and directed by James Gunn, who previously made horror-comedy "Slither". The film also got an amazing cast include: Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Nathan Fillion and Kevin Bacon. Gunn wrote the script eight years, and it took until now for him to get it made. Below is the description for "Super" trailer:
The trailer kicks off with Rainn Wilson and Liv Tyler hitting it off, and not soon after, getting married.
Things go awry almost immediately, when Wilson arrives home to find Tyler hanging out with some questionable company while getting high. Kevin Bacon plays the drug dealer at the root of the conflict. “She doesn’t want to be with you,” he says.
Wilson’s response?
Dressing up in a gold-starred red spandex suit, which covers his entire body and most of his face. He tests out his weapon–a hefty wrench–against a melon. It splatters. “That’ll do.”
Bacon is at home, being protected by his gang of baddies, when Wilson smashes a window with the wrench. They pull out their guns and aim at him. He pauses awkwardly, and bolts away from the house; he clearly didn’t think this through. They dart after him and try to chase him down.
Ellen Page makes an appearance as a weird girl who becomes his sidekick. She shows off her moves in his apartment, bouncing pathetically around the room while attempting to punch and kick and flip onto her feet while laying on the ground.
Nathan Fillion, who plays The Holy Avenger, also shows up briefly wearing an old school, yellow superhero mask.
The trailer ends with Wilson throwing a stick of dynamite at a random dude. He stares down, unsure of what he’s looking at. Then, it explodes. A mess of blood and organs and limbs fills the frame.
