In Spotlight: Crystal Liu Yifei

Chinese star Crystal Liu Yifei was born in Beijing but spent her childhood mostly in Wuhan. Her father was a 1st Secretary in the Chinese Embassy in France and French language university professor while her mother was a famous dancer and stage performer. Crystal already modeling since 8 years old; her photos are still found on some streets in Wuhan where she spent her childhood. But after the divorce of her birth parents, she left China to USA with her mother at age of 10. Crystal came back to China in 2002, where she was accepted into the prestigious Beijing Film Academy at the young age of 15. Immediately following her admittance into Beijing Film Academy, she received offers to star in various television drama serials. Her classic beauty made her a perfect figure to portray Chinese princess and period drama heroine. Crystal biggest role in television probably when she was chosen to play Xiaolongnü (Little Dragon Girl) in a new TV series adaptation of Louis Cha's most celebrated wuxia novel “The Return of the Condor Heroes”. She was even backed by the novelist himself, who felt that Crystal had all the necessary qualities to play the role of the young and innocent female protagonist. A couple year later, she’s introduced to worldwide audiences via her performance as Golden Sparrow in “The Forbidden Kingdom”. In the film, Crystal was co-starred with two international action superstars, Jackie Chan and Jet Li.
This year, Crystal will mark her comeback in big screen with another very popular character in Chinese film, a mysterious and lovely ghost girl named Nieh Hsiao Tsing aka Nie Xiaoqian. The film entitled “A Chinese Fairy Tale” is a reboot version of the famous 80’s film “A Chinese Ghost story”.
In conjunction with her acting career, Crystal also obtained a recording contract with Sony Music Entertainment Japan in August 2005. She has started studying singing and dancing in Japan since then. Her debut album was released by Sony BMG Music Entertainment (Hong Kong) in 2006. Shortly after the release of her first Mandarin album, she also enchanted the Japanese music world with her album “All My Words”, which includes "Mayonaka no Doa" ("Door of Midnight"), the end theme to the Japanese anime series The Powerpuff Girls.
